For those in and around the mining industry who follow Jesus Christ, and those who want to know more about him...

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" Psalm 34:18

The end of the year is approaching quickly. In the rush to get all our work done, make holiday arrangements and buy Christmas presents, it is easy to get stressed and take it out on those closest to us. I often reflect on how perverse this is, considering the work, the holidays, the presents are meant to bless them...yet we can undo it all with a few unkind words or actions.

I am painfully aware that some friends and family won't be around with us this year. This time of year will be especially lonely and painful because of this, only reminding us of the good times, accentuating the loss. This industry can be a lonely one: for those working FIFO away from family and friends, for those on remote postings, for those that just can't settle back into a regular life, and those that have been impacted by terrible accidents like Pike River in NZ this last week.

In all this know that the Lord is close to you, and he will save you: the best days are ahead of you.

I thought I would dedicate this newsletter to Pike River, and encourage you to keep all involved in your prayers. Next month, I will include a recap on the conference in Kalgoorlie and the 3rd installment of the 'Work as Ministry' Bible Study series.

God has said, “I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’” Zechariah 13:9

Pure Gold
That is what God wants us to become. He wants to grind away all the dross in our lives: the pride, the falseness, the bad stuff until all that is left is pure gold: the good stuff that he put in us the day we accepted Christ and received the Holy Spirit.

The process of being refined is uncomfortable. It is hard to enjoy at the time, though a little perspective can make all the difference. If we remember the close relationship that God wants with us, and the people he is turning us into, we may even look on it as a privelege.
Thanks and prayers

Give God thanks:
  • That uses the trials and testing of life to make us like pure gold
  • He is our biggest supporter in all this
  • For the great conference in Kalgoorlie and all the connections made
  • For the unity in Christ demonstrated at the conference
  • For his hand upon this network, that he is using it to bring people closer to himself

Please pray for:

  • Those that are broken or hurting this Christmas
  • Those that have lost families and friends at Pike River
  • Support, wisdom and protection over all the rescue teams and mine management at Pike River
  • Christians in the mining industry to be a beacon of hope to those looking for it
